Stop With the Complaints: We’ve Forgotten the Idea Behind Twitter

I probably hear complaints on a daily basis from people about not having enough Twitter followers. I’m even guilty of questioning myself about why I don’t have as many Twitter followers. Now, I’m not going to say Twitter isn’t a great way to not only market yourself or your brand. It’s practically free marketing, so who wouldn’t take advantage about that? But we are forgetting two of the main ideas behind Twitter, especially with things like “Twitter Trains” or buying followers.

One of the main things that people often forget about Twitter is it’s ability to allow you to connect and potentially communicate with people of interest to you. You can even get technical support from tech agents designated to provide technical support through Twitter. Like “GoDaddyGuy” provides technical support if you need any help or problems resolved with GoDaddy. It’s a pathway of communication that allows people to communicate with new people, who you wouldn’t have known without Twitter, in a less socially awkward way (because it’s a lot less personal than for example, Facebook).

Another one of main ideas behind Twitter, similar to the last, is that it’s meant to keep you updated with others. So not only can you communicate with others but you can stay updated with what they’re doing and updates within their business. I love it how I can easily access a lot of my favorite Blogger’s recent articles just by clicking the link in their status. It’s easy to keep updated with others, even for the “technologically-challenged”.

My main point here is that Twitter isn’t all about the free marketing. There’s so much more to it. All of these services that you can use to buy 1,000 followers, or build followers by following others randomly are ruining the concept of Twitter. The followers you get through these services aren’t interested in you or your services. There interested in getting as many followers as possible, then going to sponsoredtweet (or another similar program) and getting paid for allowing advertisers to sponsor one of their tweets.

I’m sick and tired of everybody complaining about their number of followers. I recently got a Twitter account for DNUnderground, and I am more than happy with my 60 or so followers that I have. Of course I would like more people to follow me, I know that the followers that I have are people who are actually interested in me. I don’t have to buy followers or use a “Twitter Train” to feel interesting. As more of these services and applications come out, the whole idea behind Twitter is being completely forgotten.
