Another Look at LLLL.com’s: Part I
If you do not know, LLLL.com’s have been on of the most controversial domains to buy and sell. In November of 2007, the domains had their buyout; around March their prices reached a high of $55 minumum wholesale. Then they started falling and are now at $15-$22 minimum wholesale.
Many big domainers have supported and gone against the theory of values in LLLL.com’s, but their seems to be no middle ground. Besides listing out points for both sides of the issue, here are some nice quotes to take into consideration:
Q. What are your thoughts on short domain names, 5 characters or less?
A. For the most part, they don’t justify their value. Right now I’m selling cr.com which makes sense because it gets a lot of ccTLD typo traffic. That’s a big part of why LLs make sense. The idea that any LLL.com is worth at least $4,000 is ludicrous to me. Just because someone might have those letters as an acronym doesn’t mean you are going to make a killing on that name. LLLLs make even less sense. Again, this question is a product of board manipulation. I suggest you and your readers come up with your own independent ideas and to do that you might need to close your laptop and take a 2 hour walk around the neighborhood. – Interview With Rick Latona – Domainer of the Year. (Dnkitchen.com)
Besides the fact it was a great interview, this question, among one other, stuck out to me. For those of you who do not know, Rick Latona is the Domainer of The Year. You can check out the interview for more details. But in this question he attacks forums and LLLL.com’s specifically saying LL’s make sense, but nothing more. Is one person’s opinon enough?
Then we bounce right back to the new proud owner of LLLL.com, bought for $7,900 on Sedo, for his opinon. Reece Berg states,
I look forward to the task of convincing domainers – new and old alike – that LLLL.coms deserve not just their respect, but a place in their domain name investment portfolio. I’m also an investor in LLL.coms and actively follow the LLLL.net, brandable 5L.com, and short numeric domain markets. The shorter the better!
For a man who just went out almost $8,000 on LLLL.com, of course he is going to be biased for his type of domains. But then again, isn’t Rick Latona biased to help boost his sales of non-LLLL.com’s.
Both sources in my eyes seem to be biased and credible all at the same time. I recommend reading some posts on Reeces’s blog, 4letternoob.wordpress.com for some more information as to why he believes in LLLL.com’s.
Considering I made a nice sizable profit off LLLL.com’s, I can’t exactly take a side on this issue. We got out just in time before the “burst,” and maybe made one or two sales losing a profit.
I would love to hear your comments on LLLL.com’s, always a popular issue.
And a hint, in Part II, I will be discussing prices being driven up due to multiple things. More importantly, my opinon on the whole thing
