Band Hero: Hello Marketing

A company, that will remain nameless for a few more sentences, is releasing a new video game called “Band Hero.” It allows you to play songs with multiple instruments. So, who released this game? I’ll give you a hint: It’s between the Rock Band series and the Guitar Hero series. (Or more specifically, RedOctane and Electronic Arts.)

Give up? It’s Guitar Hero. But wait, it also has the word Band in it? What a coincidence. And therefore, per the title of my article, “Hello Marketing.” Obviously, Guitar Hero purposely combined their competitor’s name with theirs to create the ultimate marketing *cough* scam *cough* for this Christmas.

We all know parents may not be able to distinguish what their children want. Rock Band and Guitar Hero are already basically the same game, and now that the name is similar, Band Hero is definitely going to be drilling up their sales.

How does this relate to internet marketing? It uses the same principals of the unknowing internet user; they may not know the difference between the two websites displaying similar content, and don’t really care either.

Questions of the Day:

  1. Why isn’t Rock Band suing over this title? Or, at least, would they win if they did?
  2. Have you ever tried using this idea with domaining?
