The Economic Creeper: Harvard Selling Rights to Names

Even as the economy makes its way back up, businesses are being killed and are desperate for cash. Harvard, located in Boston, is one of the most, if not the most prestigious college in the United States. Harvard has been struggling ever since the economy has taken a turn for the worse. They’re now in such debt that they have decided to selling naming rights of some of their divisions.

AboveTheLaw.com reports the divisions Harvard is selling their naming rights to. For those of you don’t know AboveTheLaw.com is one of the top legal tabloid websites on the web. They reported the following:

Item: Gannett House
Ask Price: $1.4 million and new plumbing
Possible Bidder: Barack Obama

Item: All Other HLS Journals
Ask Price: $10
Possible Bidder: Sam Walton Mike Duke

Item: HLS Career Services
Ask Price: $1 billion
Possible Bidder: U.S. Congress.

Item: Supreme Court Clerkship
Ask Price: $120,000
Possible Bidder: Tier 2, 3 or 4 law student with excellent grades

Item: Charlie Nesson
Ask Price: We pay you!
Possible Bidder: Any Coherent Law Professor

As I was reading that article, it reminded me of domaining. It’s buying and selling the rights to names. I just found this pretty interesting how the whole concept of buying and selling intellectual property rights to names could be applied in a situation like this.

This article also really got my attention because it goes to show that even as the economy seems to be going back up, businesses are still struggling. This economic downturn that we thought was behind us is now creeping back up to haunt us. I like to call this the economic creeper.

Anyways, I’d love to get your comments on this, so make sure to submit them below.
