Domaining Should Not Be Like Apple Picking
With millions upon millions of domain names registered, I always ask myself how good each of these domain names could be. I figure that less than 5% or 10% of domain names registered could make a decent website. That brings me to the question – what are these people who register 90% to 95% percent of domain names thinking when they register these names?
I am currently getting ready to go apple picking with my family as an annual tradition. We live in the north suburban area of Chicago, so we have a long drive to the orchard. Getting back to the point, people are registering domain names like they would pick apples. It’s amazing to me how many domain names are registered on a given day. Whenever I am getting ready to register a domain name, I’ll think about it first. I’ll give myself a good day or two, maybe think about it on a long car ride (like on the way to the orchard), and then I’ll make my decision as to whether I want to register it or not.
Domaining is a skill. Sometimes it requires luck to find the perfect buyer for your domain name who is willing to pay top dollar, but to acquire such a domain name you need some skill and experience. Domainers shouldn’t just be able to choose a domain name like they could pick an apple from the tree. PEOPLE ARE GETTING LAZY! You need to take you time, evaluate your options and then make your decision.
Anyways – I’m off for an evening of fun-filled apple picking. I’d like to get your comments on this though, so make sure to submit them below!
Ouch! I want to be invited
Although I don’t totally agree with your post. For Domainers, yes, some are getting lazy and try to pass off a $10 domain name for $1000. However, for developers, any domain name can be a great site. If that wasn’t true, you wouldn’t be able to create a site without paying a couple thousand on the domain name.
And when I mean any domain name, let me put restrictions on that. A sensical domain name. If I have a site about Computers, it won’t be hard to find a good domain name to form a site around. I’m not going to get Computers.com, but something like NewComputerShop.com won’t be tough to register. However, this is more aimed at Developers.
In relation to domainers, well, if you’ve been watching my comments, I think most of domaining is a bunch of BS, so most domain names that are being registered shouldn’t be so sold.
Just a bunch of rambling.
I’m going to have to agree with Mr. DNU on this one. Ross, not every domain name can make a good website. I can almost guarantee you even companies as big as Google can make a domain like XCYNWPAJSHGAQW.com a good website. You need a good, logical, memorable, or brandable name to make any halfway decent website that makes profit or even gets traffic.
That is an old discussion, generic terms will rule forever, unless you mean that a four or a five character, pronouncible dotcom who isn´t a generic term can be a hit too, but that are exceptions in my opinion.
Better focus on a hard generic dotcom, even if it´s a long one.

Pick the apples and put them in the basket. After a year when you realize that they are rotten, just throw it away. Even the most beautiful apple that looked great may not taste that great.
