Domains: A Good or Bad Investment for the Long Term Future

I used to have the belief that domains would be a great investment for the future. My thoughts were that if 10-12 year old domains are so valuable now, just imagine how valuable they will be in the future. And that’s probably a pretty common belief amongst people in the domain industry. A few nights ago, I talked with one of my good friends who just happens to be a domainer, and I brought up this subject about how domains will be extremely valuable in the future, and he surprised me with a very interesting perspective on it, which made me question my original beliefs.

His perspective was that our world is continually developing. And things are becoming outdated from generation to generation. People in the 1800’s would have never imagined that the horse and buggie would be replaced by a car. And people wouldn’t have imagined the Morse code would be replaced by anything better, until Alexander Gram Bell invented the telephone. Maybe the same will happen with the internet, and one day, it just will be outdated by newer, better technology.

Personally, I have no idea what could possibly replace and be better then the internet, but then again, as my friend stated in his perspective, no one would have ever imagined some vehicle better then the horse and buggie back in the 1800’s. But then came along the invention of the car. So you really never know what someone might cook up one day that could beat out the internet.

Now, as to what perspective I will choose to have, my persepective has changed to that of my friend’s, that one day, the internet will become outdated, and these domains will not grow in value like I thought at first. Both of the perspectives sound perfectly logical though. But I would absolutely love to hear your views and perspectives on this subject, as well as all of the viewers, so feel free to submit your comments!

I have often wondered what could replace the internet. It would have to be a gradual change or in addition to the existing technology. Voice recognition components for security and content generation have my interest. Whatever it is, as all things have a begining and an end, it will have to be faster and more accessible for all people. The net just isn’t going to get scrubbed for whole new start. Domain names will have value for sometime to come.
