Laziness in Our Generation: A Response to Bruce Marler’s Post

One of my favorite domain industry blogs is by far Bruce Marler’s; BruceMarler.com. Bruce recently wrote an interesting post posing the question, Where did professionalism go? Laziness, in my opinion, has one of the biggest links to professionalism. Its role in the up and coming generation is something that I’ve thought about from time to time, and wanted to write about.

There’s very few people on the internet that know my age, and I’m not about to tell anyone. I will say that I’m a young adult. I sent approximately 1500-3000 text messages on my Blackberry per month. While texting, one of my biggest pet peeves is when I’m in a conversation with a friend, and they’ll text me back a message with so many abbreviations that their message gets confusing (e.g. I ctn, but I’ll bbl, so g2g and ttyl!).

My theory is that texting is ruining my generation’s (this so called “up and coming generation’s”) communication skills. While some think my theory about texting is completely out of the question, I stick with it. People will not know how to communicate if this increase in texting and BBM’ing continues. This is because few people are making an effort to physically communicate. For example, (this one ALWAYS happens to me) a friend will text me, I’ll call them back right away to see what they wanted (and make sure they’re not in immediate danger), and they won’t answer. It’s clear they have their phone because they texted me a minute or two ago, yet they won’t answer their phones. They just won’t make that effort to physically communicate. IT’S PURE LAZINESS!

If you can’t physically communicate well, I don’t see how you can possibly act professional.

With all the gaming systems, computers, televisions, etc., it’s almost impossible not to be lazy. Why work when you can play Halo 3? These electronics and entertainment systems weren’t around years back. While it’s understandable that one would be lazy with all of this entertainment right at their fingertips, it’s not acceptable.

When I read Bruce’s post, I wasn’t surprised to see him mention that people interviewing for his sales job didn’t even dress up for the interview. Young adults are just too lazy to dress up, so they decide to hop in their car and go to their interviews in a t-shirt and sweatpants. Once again, right back to my main punch line, IT’S PURE LAZINESS!

My generation of young adults and even some in the generation ahead of mine, are just being too lazy, losing our communication skills, and any idea of professionalism. I’d love to get your comments :)

I think it’s just the American’s getting lazy.

Thanks much for the nice comments!

You are correct, people do not communicate as they should anymore. I do text, I do email, but at the end of the day I spend alot of my time verbally communicating either in person or on the phone. Its funny you mentioned the text message followed by a phone call but then no answer. I see that happen all the time. Weird….

Another interesting thing that happened recently was I scheduled a meeting to sit down and meet with a lady that lives locally. We met working on an online project and I thought it best to sit down and discuss the details, she was AMAZED I wanted to sit down and speak. What a novel idea I guess that is these days.

    Laziness is rampant.

On a side note, 3 different times today I had people ask about proper attire, etc for the sales meeting we are having tomorrow. I guess I made my point.

    Thanks again.
