Is Twitter Just Another Phase?

Are there people who you care about in this world. Actually, let me rephrase that. Are there people who you care about in this world enough to know what they’re doing every 5 seconds? Personally, I think most if not everyone would answer no to my rephrased question. That’s the basis for which Twitter revolves around. You can post what you’re doing as well as see what other people are doing.

Don’t get me wrong, Twitter does have it’s advantages. Twitter is a great tool for getting in contact with people you probably wouldn’t have been able to get in touch with before. But that’s the exact feature/concept of websites like LinkedIn, which I really like. But whose really interested in someone enough to want to know when and what their doing? This is what Twitter mainly revolves around, tweeting what you’re doing, as well as seeing what others are doing. To be honest, I think it’s a little creepy if you care about someone that much to want to know their exact whereabouts.

This is why I think Twitter is one giant bubble waiting to pop. People will eventually reason that it’s a silly concept. I will say this though, it’s quite an addictive website. I have a twitter account with about 550 followers, and I like to post my important announcements, or links so I can use my update as an effective marketing tool. And yes, I’m guilty of scrolling through my updates to see what people are up to every once in a while, but I mean, come on people, what’s the point?

Let me spin this into terms that might be a little bit easier to understand. Lets say a student writes an analytical essay, and gives it to you to grade. You read through the essay, and it’s well-written, but at the end of the paper, you’re thinking to yourself, “the paper’s finished?” or “what’s the student’s point?”. You’re going to give that student a bad grade on that assignment. This is alike to Twitter because although it has some features you like (alike to how the paper was well-written in my example), in the end you realize that there’s no point to Twitter (alike to how the story just ends and you don’t understand the student’s message).

I guess my example might be easier for some to understand, but anyways…I want to hear what you think about Twitter. Is it another one of those phases that fades in and out or is it here to stay? I can’t wait to see the comments!

If you think that Twitter is just about telling people what you’re doing right now, then maybe you shouldn’t be using it at all, because you have no idea what you’re talking about.

KD – Appreciate the comment. If you’re into domaining, it will stick with you no matter what internet business you ever do :)

Phil – With all do respect, I do know what I’m talking about. You need to understand that there’s always two sides to issues. Many people do agree with me that Twitter might be just another phase. And yes, I acknowledge that Twitter has it’s advantages, but are they any different than Facebook or MySpace? No, absolutely not. Twitter is a lower-class version of Facebook. And I do like Twitter, I go on at least once a day, it’s just I think that it might just be another phase.

  4. Twitter is actually useful when the tweets stay on topic. If someone is a Domainer and I follow them, for example, and they tweet about their weekend I really don’t want to hear about it. I would much rather see fewer tweets on topic, tell me which domain you just bought and at which auction site. Which domain you want to sell and for how much. If I follow 500 domainers and they all tell me about their weekend it is a waste of my time to read 500 tweets. Facebook and Twitter are similar, I wish they could be just one improved site.

    I rest my case.

The good thing about twitter is it keeps things short and simple, and you can get updates from a lot of people on one page. These days people want their info quick and to the point, which Twitter forces you to do. You can also send info out quickly to a lot of people with Twitter, so it’s great for news. If you have more to say or photos to share, put a link in your tweet. To make twitter useful for you don’t follow hundreds of people, pare your list down to the important people you want to follow. I don’t want to visit a lot of myspace pages or facebook pages, I want to log in to my twitter account and read updates from the people I choose to follow all on my one site. Perhaps twitter is so successful because it is simple. I also see lots of people, tv shows, newspapers, etc promoting their twitter urls, ‘follow us on twitter’, so it is pretty much a mainstream tool right now. Sure it is the hot thing today, but it looks like it will stay around for awhile. You can also create multiple twitter accounts for your interests, say one account to follow investing news, one account to follow your sports interests, one account for your group of friends and family, and so on.
